Book and Film Combo: “Jailed for Freedom” & “Iron Jawed Angels”

“Iron Jawed Angels,” which is about Alice Paul and the National Woman’s Party, is free on YouTube. It’s divided up into 12 sections, but it’s worth persisting to see this gem of a film. Sure, there are historical inaccuracies. An internet search will bring up a lot of what people like and don’t like about the film. It’s a great introduction to those who haven’t seen it, and worth watching again and again. The music video, “Bad Romance,” though a parody of Lady Gaga, lays out the basics of the story of Alice Paul and the picketing of the White House in 1917. It has come into my email box at least a dozen times and continues to remind us of what’s important. Here it is: This applies to everyone. become knowledgeable and vote! We owe it to our Mothers and Grandmothers who lived only 90 years ago. Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote. The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive.
